Challenge

The Pilbara region of Western Australia was struck by Tropical Cyclone Ilsa in April 2023, Pardoo Station (Pardoo), located approximately 160km鈥檚 north of Port Hedland20-centre pivot irrigation system integral to their operations for fodder and cattle feed production was extensively damaged. Pardoo has since constructed temporary cattle feed facilities to ensure that weaners onsite can continue to be fed and finished with operational and supply chain commitments met, during this transitional phase. This has triggered a reassessment of the operations and business needs of the site and as a result, it was determined that development of a weaner yards and a feeding facility were required. The proposed feedlot aligns to the company鈥檚 vision to deliver an annual turnoff of 100,000 animals of the highest Wagyu quality by 2031.

Solution

As a result of SLR鈥檚 strong multi-disciplinary approvals reputation in Western Australia, Pardoo engaged our team to support as the Lead Consultant for the Development Application, Works Approval and Licence of the proposed feedlot. As part of this engagement, our team provided a variety of technical assessments which included Ecology, Soil Science, Air Quality, Traffic Engineering, GIS, Civil Engineering, Surface Water and Wastewater Engineering.

Following these studies, our team successfully negotiated with the Department of Water & Environmental Regulation (DWER) that the boundary of the Ramsar wetland onsite is incorrectly mapped and, as a result, the development and operation of the feedlot would not have an adverse effect on the wetland habitat values. Our team also coordinated heritage surveys onsite, liaising with the traditional owners and, engaged additional specialist consultants on behalf of Pardoo to progress the feedlot applications.

Impact

The development of the feedlot at Pardoo is predicted to aid in further developing the economy within the Shire of East Pilbara with a non-mining land use. The project is ongoing with the Development Approval received from Council in August 2024 and Licence Application Approval is expected in April 2025.
